The Basics

Experience a traditional Catholic Mass or, when no service is being conducted, wander the nave free of charge, gaze at the huge stained glass windows, and take in the construction of the oldest church on US soil. Among its artifacts are the wax-covered mummy of 1st-century martyr St. Pius and the tomb of Ponce de León, notorious Spanish conquistador and the first governor of Puerto Rico. Guided walking tours of Old San Juan typically include a stop at the church.

Best food tour in PR!
Highly recommend this as one of your 1st things to do in Puerto Rico. Our tour guide, Argeli, was very knowledgeable of San Juan’s history that made you truly appreciate and understand the culture way more than just a normal food tour. He even went the extra mile to translate the tour in Spanish to my mom who was the only one in the group that did mot speak English. He took us to way more restaurants than we expected. Definitely worth the price!

My ancestors are from Old San Juan and I lived there 40 years ago in two different areas in the City. It was good to personally connect the historical events with the sights. I especially loved reminiscing…. Thank you David, (our tour guide.)

Two hours is the perfect amount of time for a tour

Old San Juan Walking Tour
David fit a lot of information in the two hour tour. I would recommend wearing some walking shoes or sandals that have straps. Some of the streets are steep and it can be uncomfortable. Also, going up and down steps. Plan to dress with light clothing and bring a water bottle with cold water. It was very hot and humid when we went, but it cooled down towards noon due to some of the streets having a breeze. Overall, I had a great time and two hours is just enough.

The Tomb of Ponce de León

On his search to discover the elusive Fountain of Youth, Ponce de León landed at a place he called Florida and later conquered Puerto Rico, eventually being appointed governor of the island in 1509. His original resting place was Iglesia de San Jose, but in the early 1900s he was transferred to San Juan Cathedral, where his body lies in a marble tomb near the transept.
