After being picked up from your Barbados hotel, meet your guide and small group of up to 12 people, and soak up the scenery en-route to the first destination—Hunte’s Garden. Learn how the botanical gardens were the creation of legendary horticulturist Anthony Hunte as you stroll around the idyllic gardens and spot an array of exotic plants, trees, and flowers.

Continue to the coast to Bathsheba beach and admire spectacular views across the Caribbean as you watch the surfers taking to the waves. Next, make a stop at the historic Morgan Lewis Windmill, the island’s last remaining sugar mill, where you can watch a sugar grinding demonstration and sample a glass of sweet sugar cane juice.

After a quick stop to admire the views from Cherry Tree Hill, arrive at the final stop of the day—St Nicholas Abbey. Hear how the 17th-century mansion is one of the last remaining plantation houses in the Western Hemisphere, and head inside to explore the historic building and sample some of its traditional rum, which is produced on-site.

Your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Bathsheba Beach
Bathsheba is located on the Eastern coastline of Barbados. It is said that this area was named after the wife of King David whose name was “Bathsheba”. Legend has it that she bathed in milk to keep her skin beautiful and soft, and the rolling surf waters of Bathsheba’s “Soup Bowl” resembled Bathsheba’s bath. The area is popular with surfers. It is a popular area for locals and visitors alike and is dotted with several seaside cottages.

Morgan Lewis Mill
The Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill was built in 1727 it is one of the many Barbadian windmills once used to produce sugar, and one of the two last functioning sugar windmills in the world. The Morgan Lewis Mill ceased grinding sugarcane for commercial purposes in 1947 and was subsequently given to the Barbados National Trust.
Stop At:
Cherry Tree Hill
Cherry Tree Hill is eight hundred and fifty (850) ft above sea level and is a part of St. Nicholas Abbey plantation. Actually due to the size of the St. Nicholas Abbey property, Cherry Tree Hill actually borders, St.Peter and St. Andrew. Many years ago, the drive on either side to get to it was flanked by cherry trees, thus the reason for its name; however these were replaced with mahogany trees which now line the road. The trees were planted in celebration of the signing of The Treaty of Paris in 1763

Beautiful Hunte’s garden and rum tasting at the Abbey
Sujit_D
, Apr 2022
Hunte’s garden was fabulous. The lush vegetation and colorful tropical flowers and foliage were outstanding as was meeting and rum tasting with Mr Hunte at the end. Our visit to St Nicholas Abbey was pretty much self guided since not enough guides were available. The documentary movie shot almost a century back was very informative. The tour operators “Beautiful Barbados Tours“ were very well organized and the drivers were very knowledgeable about the history of Barbados and the Caribbean.

Great tour

Hunte’s Garden was full of lush vegetation and tropical flowers - it was stunning. It was also very nice to talk to Mr Hunte in his house (while he offered us rum). St Nicholas Abbey was a former plantation house (no religious connection) - the rooms had been filled with the original style furniture, so it was easy to imagine how it was in the past. Very interesting. We were also driven to see Bathsheba beach which is in the East of the island and has rough/surfing waves. We stopped to take a photo of Morgan Lewis windmill. Our driver was Charles who was very pleasant and informative. A tour to remember and a nice change from the beach.

Hunters garden is truely a spectacular garden of Eden. Created with the eyes of a horticultural genius. St Nicholas Abbey and distillery is a time capsule of 17th century England in the Highlands of Barbados. Choose this tour you will not be disappointed 10/10

This was a fun tour. The gardens are beautiful and so relaxing. I was concerned about spending an hour here, but ended up having to hurry to the van to leave on time. The tour of St Nicholas Abbey was informational and entertaining. Our guide for the tour was very friendly and informative. The guide at the Abbey was wonderful! She was so well informed about the house, grounds, and especially the distillery.

A Must See in Barbados

Hunt’s Garden is absolutely stunning, there is nothing else like it in the Caribbean. It’s like you stepped back in time to a lush natural part of the island, filled with the most gorgeous plants & flowerings. Mr Hunt himself spoke with us & shared his home (which was originally a stable). I would highly recommend seeing these gardens St Nicholas Abby, another beautiful setting. We spent approx 1.5 hrs here, which was enough to tour the house & distillery. I’ve read in other reviews that people complained about not being able to tour the 2nd floor of the home but there is a VERY good reason for that...the home is the original building & the second floor has been deemed not safe for people to be walking around! (Insurance will not allow this). I still believe this is a well worth tour & definitely recommend.

Picked up from hotel, taken to a pick up point where all mini buses meet, introduced to our driver first stop with Hunte’s gardens amazing place flowers & plants was stunning, unfortunately the weather was non stop rain umbrellas was provided the gardens are on different level so not very well suited to a persons who’s mobility is affected. Abbey was interesting.

The WOW factor is alive and well

Mr. Hunte greeted us as we entered as well as the afternoon shower. He immediately inquired how many umbrelles we wished to have. After stopping every few feet to take photo images, we were amazed at our fortunes to come upon this beautiful marvel. Mr. Hunte had made the highlight of our day by allowing us a visit we will never forget. If you think you are interested, don’t even hesitate. Book it, and don’t forget your camera. Our only regret is not spending more time with Mr. Hunte. (My wife wants to live there)

LOL I love your review. Yes the WOW factor is alive and well. I often wish I could meet all my customers in the way he does. He is very passionate about what he does and it shows in both the gardens and the time he takes to entertain all visitors to the garden. Hunte's Gardens is a must for anyone visiting Barbados.

Historical?
jenniferbarry29
, Oct 2019
A very interesting and worthwhile tour. The Hunte's Garden was a very enchanting place and we could have spent all day there. St Nicolas Abbey was interesting from a historical, albeit 'sanitised' perspective. It is a former plantation with a history of using slaves which is not referred to. The 1930's film about life there could have been made one hundred years earlier in regards to attitudes towards the workers on the estate.
icon Response from Host , Oct 2019
Thank you for your review. Hunte's Garden is a wonderful place indeed and I myself have spent many hours there. St Nicholas Abbey is interesting. I understand your point about the history of slavery not being referred to.... It is a tough one.... The truth is that we have many different persons that visit Barbados. I will give you a few examples of how people differ. Example #1 Most people like yourselves enjoy Huntes Gardens and would spend more time there; however we had a family a few months ago that after a short while in the Garden demanded that they guide take them back to the ship. They were uncomfortable because of the heat and humidity in the garden....Now bear in mind it is a tropical garden so there is some heat and humidity one should expect and customers are provided with water..... The customers expected us to abandon everyone else on tour and take them back to the port and when we did not do as they demanded they wrote bad reviews about us on Trip Advisor, Facebook and Google. Example #2 You desire more info on slavery at St Nicholas which I appreciate because I love history and I know it is important to know it and understand it so we do not repeat the mistakes of our past and we can learn the best way forward. It was a extremely horrific and terrifying part of our past and we should never forget it just as we should never forget the holocaust and we should ensure that the memory of them make us better people. There are some however who hate to hear anything about Slavery and become very emotional and have extreme outburst... every so often we have a few customers like this.... We had such a customer the other day who because the guide at St Nicholas mentioned slavery they deemed the whole tour horrible and that he had to endure it all day.... Sometimes as guides on excursions and at attractions such as St Nicholas its a hard thing to balance. Each customer has their own likes, dislikes and expectations and for some customers when. you don't give them exactly what they want they threaten you, try to blackmail you. I will give you another example. A few weeks ago we had a tour departing the port. Pick up time was 8:35am, some customers arrived early. At departure time we were still missing 1 family. We waited 20 minutes for them, normally the max wait time is 10minutes. Eventually we had to leave without them. They showed up about 10-15 minutes after the departure and threatened our staff, called the police, wanted a refund and compensation. They went online on Trip Advisor Google and Facebook and wrote negative reviews all the while telling us if we don't give them money they won't stop... Some of the reviews we thankfully have been able to get removed as we had evidence of their threats. We never buckle to these type of blackmailers. If we did not leave when we did that day our other customers on tour would have missed stops on their tour but the family that was late had no concern for anyone else. They claimed their ship was late but it was not as the other customers on the tour were on the same ship and no one else missed their tour that day. I know this is a long response to your review but I thought I would just give you a sneak peak to some of the issues we encounter and perhaps explain in part how sometimes aspects of a tour are affected by customers actions and how very difficult it can be to balance. Happy travels to you and thank you again for touring with Glory Tours in Barbados :)

This was a fabulous tour. Huntes Gardens is absolutely beautiful. The greenery and the flowers are in an outstanding setting. We had no idea that we would meet Mr. Hunte as well. Just loved it. St. Nicholas Abbey was great! Nice tour of the grounds and history. Steven was our driver and he pointed out many special places on the island. A great tour guide!

This tour is great if your staying in Barbados and dont have a rental car or if you are on a cruise ship. You have the chance to see a good portion of the island while travelling to the sites. Huntes garden is a great place to see lots of beautiful plants, trees and flowers in an near natural environment. St Nicolas Abbey is also a great place with lots of history. The rum is good but very pricy. We had a great guide/driver. He was funny and we learned a lot about the island from all his commentaries and quizzes.

Great day out! We were picked up promptly by a very friendly driver, got plenty of time to wander around the fabulous Hunte's Garden and were given a very informative tour of St Nicholas Abbey. It was great to chat with the driver to get local knowledge, and we felt like we got a really good view of different parts of the country. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Anthony Hunte is wonderful and so is his garden. If you are at all interested in plants and garden design I suggest you visit his 150 year old house and 2 acre property. It can easily be traversed in about an hour, or stay longer and enjoy a nip of rum. Truly wonderful experience.
